How to choose the right sized ceiling fan for your space
Choosing the right size of fan depends not only on the size of the room; It is also important to consider the layout of the room, where in the room people tend to congregate, where the airflow is most required and how high the ceiling is.
Smaller diameter fans (1.2m – 1.4m) rotate faster than larger fans and produce mainly downdraft within a radius extending up to a metre beyond the blade tips.
Larger fans (1.5m – 1.8m) produce greater side-draft and less direct down-draft. Therefore, when selecting a fan, it’s important to decide whether a direct cooling draft is required or whether a gentle air circulation is more important.
In a large room, where many people may congregate (like a living room or dining area), it may be better to install two or more smaller fans rather than one large diameter fan.
Given below is a sizing chart that can be used as a rough guide to selecting the right sized fan for your space.
At what distance should a fan be placed from the ceiling?
While a ceiling fan operating at normal speed is not dangerous, at maximum speed it can cause damage if something gets in its way. This is why the space in which it is placed must have a high enough ceiling to prevent something like this occurring.
It is generally recommended that ceiling fans be positioned between 2.5m – 2.9m from the floor, although could be hung lower if it is located in areas like above a dining room table or perhaps a bed, where the risk of getting in its way is minimal.
A quick rule of thumb is to measure the height from floor ceiling and then deduct 2.7m. The resulting figure should be the length of the down rod you will need.
For safety reasons fan blades should never be positioned lower than 2.3m from floor level. Ceiling heights and downrod lengths will differ on each building, so it is best to discuss the specific measurements with the ceiling fan sales team.
